Rwanda, Kigali, and the hospital

I had the privilege of touring the government hospital in Kigali. I spent about three hours seeing as much as I could. I was seeing it through the eyes of my profession, which is emergency physician. I learned about the needs of the hospital, including physicians, equipment, infrastructure. It was good to see that the nurses and physicians there recognized the need for hand washing. They had a cart on every ward with a dank of water and a faucet. A basin was under the faucet. That was the place they washed their hands. This was readily available on every ward. Exam gloves were used at times. You might gather from my description that in general, there was no running water on the wards as far as I can determine. The person who was my guide indicated this was a correct assessment. I would like to talk to knowledgeable people about how to improve on this. Samuel Richardson, MD
